Katharina Schultens, born in 1980 in Kirchen (Sieg), has worked since 2012 at the Humboldt University of Berlin as managing director of a graduate school for the sciences. Her poems, too, are anything but hermetic, self-contained constructs. They combine technical jargon with dark Romanticism, anger with hope, political analysis with deeply personal imagery. As well as four books of poetry, Schultens has published two essays which likewise combine discursive and poetic thought. The jury of the 2019 Basle Poetry Prize praised Schultens for “the immense power of her language that unswervingly strikes to the heart of the present”. She is currently working on her first novel.
