Mircea Cărtărescu, Romania

Mircea Cărtărescu, born 1956 in Bucharest, ranks next to Gabriela Adameșteanu and Péter Nádas as one of the last great European storytellers. His Europe-wide breakthrough as a novelist came in 2007 with the first part of his Orbitor trilogy, which was quickly followed by Part 2 and Part 3 and confirmed Cărtărescu’s reputation as an exceptional writer. Few readers outside Romania are aware that until 1989 he wrote only poetry. Zsolnay Verlag is currently preparing a large selection of his poems in German translation, but no English translations have yet been published.
