Fingertips

I remember
when the world used to smell of your fingertips.
I remember
when the air was full of your gestures
and when the streets rang loud with your words.
I remember
when the sculptures were safe in your hands
and their lines bent to your will.
I remember
that you bent me.
I remember
when the rooms were empty and still
a fingerprint was left on the divan
with whorls that tangle around and around.
and I remembered
when the world used to smell of your fingertips.

The Middle Man

Sit on the gate
-and wait-
till the angels pass you by.
The softly whispering city
Hears nothing of your pain.
Pity.

Stare death in the face
-in case-
it’s a long deadly race
I’ll give you a hint-
It is.

Walk on the road
-unload-
the baggage that batters you down.
‘’you stayed on the street far too long!’’
Hands stretched out
Thousand yard stare–
It’s there.

Stand on a rail
-and hail-
the shining eye of the Cyclops.
It’ll suck you in its wake
screaming through the night–
Red light.

Look death in the eye
-don’t cry-
The world blurs around you
The hearse drives so close
It could stretch out its fingers
And pull you inside.

Schneckengrammatik

Ich bin die Schnecke
lakritz-Süßigkeit-bitterschmeck
in Kinderhänden
Beiß mich
meine Schale knackst knusprig-kalzium
zeichne mich so spiralenglatt
Öl und Farbenteller
ein mathematisches Wunder
Dreh den Kompass in meine Windung
und baue ein Haus aus mir
denn ich nehme meins mit
auf mein Schleimschlierenpfad
Beiß mich.

Like the Current of A River

Here is a river–
It runs through the caverns below
the water drips from stalactites
that feed the green lichens
bats flutter over the current

swooping through the dark air
there are the rats, that skitter and wait.
And here in the stillness
hidden from the light
runs a river
deep beneath the mountain
that is great
that gives life and guidance
to the people of the land
that gives a home to the weary
and the birds of the sky
that hides in its branches
and the roots of its trees
the mice that nibble and squeak.
And no one knows
not the worms, not the moles
nor the miners that dig in so deep
that the mountain of old hides a river
that runs through the caverns below.
