Caroline Bergvall is a politically thinking and acting poet in the emphatic sense. This is demonstrated in her new multi-lingual work Sonic Atlas, which reacts to the refugee crisis and modern extremism.

Caroline Bergvall (born in Hamburg in 1962) is a politically thinking and acting poet in the emphatic sense. This is demonstrated in her new multi-lingual work Sonic Atlas, which reacts to the refugee crisis and modern extremism. It foregrounds minority languages in the UK and the EU that exist side-by-side with English and other, dominant, European languages.

Sonic Atlas has been created in collaboration with the well-known British composer Gavin Bryars and seven UK poets who joined Caroline Bergvall in writing poems on the subject of ‘Refuge’, in which voices and languages overlay each other. The voice of Caroline Bergvall blends with Bryar’s vocal composition and recordings of the multilingual poem which are processed by sound artist Jamie Hamilton.
